A While back i talked about using illustrator as a medium to watercolor . It is an experiment by myself to see if we are able to deliver a watercolor effect through a digital painting that too in vector.

In order to follow me through the process i decided to put up a series of posts which will be sort of an online course in painting. This is the first post in the series.  In order to make things a bit simple for the learners who join us at a later stage I have decided to make these posts sequential posts. ie you must go through first post to read the next post next day OR

schemeWhy all this trouble!!

Why understanding colors is important is mainly because we will be creating our color schemes based on this!. The final mood and scheme of the artwork depends greatly on the color scheme that you chose. Based on the colors you will build up Mood and Feel of the artwork.

Once you have imagined the artwork that you will be working your way toward you need to lay down the color scheme related to that.

A color wheel is an organization of colors showing relationship between the colors. any color circle or color wheel which presents a logically arranged sequence of pure hues has merit.

Here is how colors are differentiated and described

Primary Colors (RGB) / Secondary (YMC)

Warm (YRM) / Cool (GCB)

Saturated / Achromatic (B’nW)

Primary Colors

In theory there are Three basic color which can be mixed to attain secondary colors these Primary 3 Colors are RED , YELLOW , BLUE

Secondary Colors

Secondary Colors are 6 colors attained by basic mixing of these colors. These are Green, orange and purple.

These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That’s why the hue is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.12part

Building a Color Scheme

The color scheme is usually 2-3 main colors that you build your colors from.

How to build up a scheme from basic shades

Step1:- Choose Two shades one over the other

Step2:- Go to object blend > specified steps > 2

Step3:- Select both shades go to Object > Blend

Step4:- Select all object expand fills and strokes

schemeWhat i did over here is picked up some basic colours and used Blend tool in 2 specified steps achieved 2 more intermediate colours. Later you can use eyedropper tool to pick up these shades and save as swatches OR click on small arrow next to swatches palette to extract colours from the scheme that you decided to work upon.
